Snorkeling in the Rain- Koh Chang, Thailand- 2018

Koh Chang is the perfect place for someone who loves the water. There are so many things you can do that include water: kayaking, swimming and snorkeling. The water is deliciously warm and crystal clear and you can easily spend hours just floating and taking in the sun.

Koh Chang is Paradise

Koh Chang is the perfect place for someone who loves the water. There are so many things you can do that include water: kayaking, swimming and snorkeling. The water is deliciously warm and crystal clear and you can easily spend hours just floating and taking in the sun.

I knew I was going to love spending hours on the beach relaxing but I was also excited to see if we could take a day and go snorkeling. We scheduled a trip through Indie Beach, the place we were staying, for 700 baht per person ($10-11 each). I was super excited. The night before we packed up our stuff, set our alarms and went to bed early so we were well rested.

Snorkeling Day

When I woke up the next morning I was shocked. Never in my life had I seen so much rain coming down so hard and fast and I’m an Oregonian. For those of you who don’t know Oregon, state in the USA, is known for rain, like ALL year. But this was tropical rain and something that was beyond anything I had ever seen before.

I asked Gus if the trip was canceled and he called and told me that No the trip was still on and they would be there shortly. So… I said What the hell it would be part of the adventure!

The truck picked us up and we jumped in the backseat with a couple of other groups. It took us to the nearby port where we got off (still raining) and proceeded to walk down a long dock to the very end where the boat was waiting for us.

The plan was to go to three islands. Patiently and open minded we boarded the boat and set off. The waves were choppy but the rain had died down and the sun was fighting to break free of the clouds.

The Islands

1. The first island was beautiful and while the water was warm we could barely see anything. It started raining again while we were in the water so rather than attempt to see fish, most likely hiding anyways, we ended up just jumping off the boat and going down the slide that was attached. It was actually still a lot of fun.

2. Next we went to a second island and people were given bait and string to fish. I opted out of this but it was fun to watch the faces of the tourists as they gleefully jumped up and down when they caught a little fish.

3. Lastly the third island. This was by far the best! By the time we reached the sun had come out and the rain had completely stopped. The island had a beautiful white sand beach and I have never seen water so clear. We were able to walk around the beach, snorkel if we wanted and just explore. A group of tourists were playfully catching sand crabs while others were swimming in the water. It was incredible.

At the End of the Day

Overall the trip was a success. Even on a rainy day the water was still warm and it was very fun exploring the surrounding islands. I can only imagine how wonderful it is to explore during the high season.

If you want to visit Koh Chang the best time to go is sometime between November and February. This is after the rainy season but before the super hot weather roles in. Sun shines everyday and there is a plethora of things to do.
