Things to do in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, otherwise known as KL, is the capital of Malaysia and home to roughly 1.5 million people (United Nations). The city is filled with a busy nightlife, great museums, beautiful gardens and so much more. There are many different things to do in Kuala Lumpur along with tons of great places to stay.

How to Get Around in Kuala Lumpur

Transportation in Kuala Lumpur can feel a bit overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. The easiest way to get around is by using the public transportation.

To get into the city from the International Airport it costs roughly 55 ringgit and takes about 25-30 minutes using the KLIA Express train. The train drops you off at KL Sentral, the main hub of all public transportation. From there you can get anywhere in the city using one of the following systems:

  1. Komuter Train– Use this train to get to the Batu Caves
  2. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT-SBK): This line runs straight downtown and can give you access to the main tourist attractions in the city.
  3. Go KL City Bus– a free bus that can take you all around the city including Chinatown, KLCC and Bukit Bintang.
  4. RapidKL Bus– not the best for tourists but still an option.
  5. The Lite Rail Transit(LRT) great for non-city centre attractions
  6. Grab– this is an easy and fast option but can get a little pricey. Regardless of the price however it works well for late night adventures and rides home.
  7. KLIA Express– airport transit. When you return to the airport make sure to check which airport your flight flies out of . If you are flying Air Asia be sure to get off at KLIA 2.

Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur

If you are looking to find affordable accommodation then Hostelworld will be your best friend. The site and now app provides users with budget friendly accommodation all around the world.

In Kuala Lumpur I found a great Hostel called Twenty5 by Ohana through Hostelworld. The hostel is located downtown and is a short walk to the Twin Towers. It has a great air conditioned common space with a pool table, a tv (movies provided) and great wifi connection. In addition the hostel has its own Kitchen for guests to use and a beautiful view of the city.

If you can’t find something in your price range or to your liking using Hostelworld you can also check out Airbnb and Booking.com for nice accomodation options.

7 Things to do in Kuala Lumpur:

KLCC

A giant mall and shopping district located downtown. KLCC is a great place to explore when you have had enough of the heat and need an air conditioned break. It is also close to loads of other activities.

Petronas Twin Towers

One of the most iconic photo spots of the city, Petronas Twin Towers is a must see during the day and at night when the structures light up the city.

Batu Caves

A little bit out of the city but worth the long metro ride. This is a beautiful temple that is located inside a cave. Be sure to check out the neighbor temple that is below the entrance of the Batu Caves. The caves are free to enter.

Tip: Don’t forget to where long pants and a shirt that is covering your shoulders, otherwise you will have to pay for a temporary cover-up. This applies for men and women.

Botanical Gardens

One of my favorite attractions, the Botanical Gardens are relaxing and a breath of fresh air. Be sure to visit the Orchid Gardens and the Hibiscus Gardens as they are the best parts. The gardens are free to enter.

National Museum

The National Museum is a great source of information, especially if you are unfamiliar with the History of Malaysia. The Museum costs 10 ringgit to enter.

Jamek Mosque

A beautiful mosque that sits by a river and in the middle of downtown. The mosque is free to enter but only at open hours. You also need to be in full robe and hijab if you are a woman.

KLCC Park

After exploring the KLCC shopping district head to the park for some quiet time in the park. Free and open to the public.

Overall, I would recommend a stay of 3-4 days in Kuala Lumpur. You can also get super cheap flights out of Kuala Lumpur to Penang, Singapore and other surrounding countries.
